Calendar of Events 2020 - October

ALERT: All in-person programming will have Phase 3 guidelines that patrons must follow if they are to remain on site. These guidelines are accessible at the front page of this website. If Phase 4 guidelines are issued for September HRPO may alter in-person programming accordingly.

Thursday 1 October

6:00 pm to 7:30 pm: Mercurian Elongation Periodically Mercury☿ reaches its greatest angular separation in the sky (elongation) from the Sun☉. This is the safest way to view Mercury☿ by amateurs. Come join us at the Burbank Soccer Complex! The planet will appear as a “gibbous-Mercury.” Jupiter♃ and Saturn♄ will also be seen. [No admission fee. For all ages.]

Saturday 3 October

4:00 pm to 10:00 pm: Spooky Sensation This one-time-only replacement event for International Astronomy Day will feature viewing, games, activities and physical science demonstrations. [No admission fee. For all ages. Binocular recommended.]

Friday 9 October

8:30 pm to 10:00 pm: Evening Sky Viewing Weather permitting, viewing through one or more telescopes will take place. During this time the Last Quarter Moon will be below the horizon. Please keep headlights off while parking and leaving, and drive slowly! [No admission fee. For all ages.]

Saturday 10 October

7:30 pm to 10:00 pm: Evening Sky Viewing Weather permitting, viewing through one or more telescopes will take place. During this time the waning crescent Moon will be below the horizon. Please keep headlights off while parking and leaving, and drive slowly! [No admission fee. For all ages.]

Tuesday 13 October

6:30 pm to 12:30 am: Great Martian Opposition Mars♂ is exactly 180 degrees from the Sun☉, rising as the Sun☉ is setting. We are now the closest we’ll be to Mars♂ in fifteen years! Weather permitting viewing of Mars♂ (and Jupiter♃, and Saturn♄, and Uranus♅, and Neptune♆) will take place. [No admission fee. For all ages. Binocular recommended.]

Saturday 17 October

12:00 pm to 2:00 pm: Solar Viewing Weather permitting, safe viewing of the Sun☉ in three different manners will occur. During this time the Sun☉ will be in the constellation Virgo♍ at a maximum altitude of 50°. [No admission fee. For all ages. Solar viewers available for $2.00; limit four per adult purchaser.]
7:30 pm to 10:00 pm: Evening Sky Viewing Weather permitting, viewing through one or more telescopes will take place. During this time the waxing crescent Moon will be below the horizon. Please keep headlights off while parking and leaving, and drive slowly! [No admission fee. For all ages.]

Friday 23 October

8:30 pm to 10:00 pm: Evening Sky Viewing Weather permitting, viewing through one or more telescopes will take place. During this time the waxing gibbous Moon will be at a maximum altitude of 35°. Please keep headlights off while parking and leaving, and drive slowly! [No admission fee. For all ages.]

Saturday 24 October

7:30 pm to 10:00 pm: Evening Sky Viewing Weather permitting, viewing through one or more telescopes will take place. During this time the waxing gibbous Moon will be at a maximum altitude of 40°. Please keep headlights off while parking and leaving, and drive slowly! [No admission fee. For all ages.]

Friday 30 October

7:45 pm to 9:45 pm: Uranian Opposition Uranus♅ is exactly 180 degrees from the Sun☉, rising as the Sun☉ is setting. We are now the closest we’ll be to Uranus♅ this year! Weather permitting viewing of Uranus♅ will take place. Mars♂, Jupiter♃, Saturn♄, and Neptune♆ will also be seen. [No admission fee. For all ages.]

Saturday 31 October

7:00 pm to 11:00 pm: Lunar Halloween Party All things Moon will be celebrated on this night. [No admission fee. For all ages. Drinks and refreshments if virus shutdown policies allow.]
